The Astra Militarum, also known as the Imperial Guard, are the backbone of the Imperium. Soldiers from countless worlds who fight in the name of the Emperor. They are not genetically enhanced super soldiers, but ordinary people who rely on rigorous training, massive numbers of men, and a vast arsenal of war machines.
On the battlefield, the Astra Militarum rely on overwhelming firepower and armored vehicles. Their army consists of thousands of soldiers, supported by huge tanks, artillery batteries, and transport vehicles. While a single guard may not last long, together they form an unstoppable firestorm.
From a gaming perspective:
- Playstyle: Long-range firepower, armor, and mass units.
- Strengths: Very strong artillery and vehicles, wide range of units, ability to dominate the field with manpower.
- Challenges: Weak individual resilience. Success requires teamwork between units.

- Artillery units like Basilisks and Manticores bombard the enemy from a safe distance.
- Infantry units are inexpensive and easy to deploy to control objectives.
- Rules like Orders allow commanders to grant additional actions and improvements to units.
Painting and collecting:
Astra Militarum offers a huge amount of theming possibilities. You can build your army in the classic green and grey of the Cadian world, the jungle warriors of Catachan, or a completely custom color scheme that suits your own wargame. Painting your vehicles provides a great opportunity to add weather effects, mud, and wear.
